Our History and Background
Family owned and operated since 1967, Cascade Vista has long provided
quality care for its residents, as well as implementing innovative ideas to continually
meet the evolving needs of its resident population.
Cascade Vista, when it opened its doors
January 10, 1967, was the first
carpeted facility in Washington state. Before then, nursing homes more closely resembled
hospitals, but the Barneses knew they were different from hospitals and needed their own
approach to nursing care. With this in mind, the Barneses were the first to use dining
assistants and bed makers in their facility; the first to offer nurses' aide training
classes; and the first to create the lead aide position. With the cooperation of Bill
Woods at Lakeshore Pharmacy, the Barneses helped create and implement the unit dose drug
distribution system currently used in Cascade Vista today. With this system, nurses no
longer had to dispose of unused medication. The unit dose system enabled the pharmacy to
only bill residents for the medication they used. The desire to make a difference at times
meant the Barneses met with opposition, but they knew their ideas could work. And it
is these ideas that have made them forerunners in the nursing home industry.
From hand-selecting on a brisk Thanksgiving day in 1966 the rocks you see
at the entrance to Cascade Vista; to being actively involved in the construction of the
facility; to personally hiring each employee; Floyd and Pearl have from day one been
committed to presenting the public with a nursing care facility they could be proud of.
And it is this pride of ownership and commitment to quality that makes Cascade Vista a
unique place where people care.
